A large Victorian crocodile leather Gladstone Bag, of typical form with brass hinges, inscribed on one hinge 'W.D.J., patent applies for' and on the other 'Henley, Hull', with three brass studs to each end.

A gladstone bag is a small form of suitcase built over a rigid frame, but unlike a suitcase it is deeper in proportion to its length. They are named after William Gladstone (1809 - 1898), the four-time Prime Minister of the UK.
