The Mexico's design was derived from a 2+2 prototype bodywork shown on the Vignale stand at the October 1965 Salone di Torino and built upon a 4.9-litre 5000 GT chassis, rebodied after it had been damaged. As the car after the show was sold to Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos, the model became known as the Mexico. By coincidence, John Surtees won the Mexican Grand Prix on a Cooper-Maserati T81 the following year. Vignale's prototype was so well received that Maserati immediately made plans to put a version into production.
The production Maserati Mexico first debuted in August 1966 at the 20° Concorso internazionale di eleganza per auto in Rimini, while its international première was at the October Paris Motor Show. It was built on the first generation Quattroporte chassis with a wheelbase shortened by 11 cm.
Originally powered by a 4.7-litre 90° V8 fed by four twin-choke 38 DCNL5 Weber carburetors, the car was later, contrary to Maserati tradition, offered with the smaller 4.2-litre V8 engine.
In total 485 Mexicos were produced, 305 with the 4.2 litre engine, and just 175 with the 4.7 litre engine.
The Mexico shown here is a beautifully restored and rare, early production Mexico 4700 with the biggest and most powerful V8 engine. Originally delivered in Geneva Switzerland to a Mr. Edmond Artar in Argento Auteuil (silvergrey) with Connolly leather interior in the colour Senape (mustard).
In 1972 the owner was a Mr. K. Hauser of Naefels/Glarus Switserland and according to copy of its registratio it was repainted in light blue metallic.
Then the car came in a Dutch Maserati collection and was bought in 2006 by the current Maserati enthusiast with the intention to restore the car back to its original glory. With the values in 2006 around 30-35.000 Euro you must be a real enthusiast to start an expensive ground up restoration!
The bodywork was stripped to bare metal and the sills and floors were repaired. The mechanics were rebuilt and the engine and carburettors stripped and rebuilt from the crankshaft.
The original leather interior was well kept so only cleaned and treated and repaired where necessary. The carpets were nicely replaced. Chrome was rechromed where necessary and the bumpers now are really nice original ones not cheap replacements.
After this well documented restoration proces the car was finally ready in 2017.
The matching nr. engine now has done 6.000 km. Total mileage on clock is **77.000 km**.
This car drives really well and is really fast! The engine shows its racing heritage.
The output for the 4.7 litre V8 engines was, according to Maserati, between 290 and 335 BHP. Enough for a written 252 km/h with the long rear axle.
This is a lovely car and it is also an early production example.
After 12 years it is time for a new 'caretaker' to enjoy this wonderful Maserati Mexico!
Dutch registered and APK (MOT/TUV/CT) and comes with original instruction manual, invoices, films and photos of the restoration.
