The tremendous success Bentley enjoyed with the R Type Continental continued onto the S Series chassis in late 1955 with a range of new bodies available to collectors. The Park Ward fixed head coupe was originally the brain child of legendary coachwork designer John Blatchley who had been largely responsible for the styling of the R Type Continental by H.J. Mulliner. Six R Type Continental chassis were delivered to the Park Ward works who were then owned by Rolls-Royce. Blatchley was given the task of styling the four drophead coupes and the two further fixed head coupes on the R Type Continental chassis, designs which was later slightly adapted for the marginally longer S1 Continental chassis. Chassis No BC23LCH which we are currently offering for sale is one of just twenty four examples built to Design No 701 in left hand drive by Park Ward. It is fitted with the later, arguably more attractive rear light configuration, with slightly smaller rear fins. It also benefits from the S1 Continental mechanical upgrades in the form of power steering, the larger 8:1 compression carburettors and the dual braking system, all of which were original fittings in 1957. It is also fitted with the smaller rear windshield option, with larger C posts, giving the motor car a more attractive side profile and overall appearance than the later wrap around rear window variants. Chassis No BC23LCH was completed in July of 1957 and supplied by Garage de L'Athenee to their customer, a Mr Sfezzo of Switzerland. The car remained in Switzerland for some years before crossing into Germany where it has resided in more recent times. It is believed that the current odometer reading of 84,000 kilometres from new is correct. A complete engine overhaul was undertaken just 2,000 kilometres ago, to complement the fitting of electronic ignition and a larger radiator tank to aid cooling on long journeys. The car has been very well maintained by the current owner and formed an important part of his high quality collection of post war Bentley Continentals. Finished in the attractive colour combination of silver with a light grey leather interior, this car presents beautifully. It features the rarely seen option of power windows and has also been fitted with air conditioning which is ducted through bulls eye style chrome vents that sit below the main dashboard fascia. It also comes complete with small and large tools in the boot. The car will be serviced, prepared and tested as per our normal policy to ensure reliable and pleasurable motoring for the next fortunate owner. We feel this particular model is not only a wonderful car to own, drive and enjoy but also has very good long term potential for appreciation in value.
