Year: 1896
A silver and crystal glass hip flask of unusual design, the bayonet cap over a moulded glass body, each side mounted with silver drinking cup with gilt interior, hallmarked for London 1896, mark of TW for Thomas Whitehouse.
Thomas Whitehouse first registered his mark in 1848 in Clerkenwell, South East London. He is listed as a silversmith and manufacturer of silver dressing case and bag fittings, spring tops etc. At the time of his death in 1898 he was described as a dressing case maker.
It would have taken the skills of a specialist maker such as Whitehouse to construct such a well-designed object. The vast majority of hip flasks have none or a single drinking cup, whilst this deluxe version has the more sociable number of two cups.
