The Chequered canvas appeared in 1880\\. This motif, first a woven design, was made in a printed version at the beginning of the following century with the advent of coated canvas. The printed version preserved a trompe-l'oeil aspect of woven fabric, while evoking the words "L.Vuitton Registered Trademark. Louis Vuitton, 1 Rue Scribe, Paris, 149 New Bond Street, London, Made in France".
