Vintage Large Mahogany Pedestal Partners Desk
US$3,474.58
This is a large, vintage Victorian style partner’s desk, masterfully crafted in mahogany, from the second half of the 20th century. The desk has its original gilded tooled leather writing surface and brass drop handles. It is finished on all sides and can stand in the middle of a room, and has very attractive pannelled sides. This grand desk has a very solid construction, with a total of eight drawers on the front, three of which are along the top level. The two outside drawers on top each have a slide which has been fitted with leather to match the leather on the top. The bottom right drawer is extra deep for use as a filing drawer. The back of the desk features three drawers along the top and below that a cupboard on each side. There is a useful large pull out slide on the back of the desk which has also been leathered to match. Partners desks were made with drawers on one side and drawers and cupboards on the other, making it possible for two people to work at the same time, hence the term "partners desk". There is no mistaking its superb quality and elaborate design, which is certain to make it a talking point in your home and add a touch of luxury to your study room. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ Mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ Mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850′s, this particular variety became all but extinct.
