This is a gorgeous silver plated Monteith punch bowl. Around the top of this exquisite punch bowl are bunches of grapes that are connected by twisting vines which are flanked by leaves. This beautiful embossed decoration is incredibly detailed. They were conceived in England as a ‘variation on a theme’. Allegedly they were designed by a gentleman called Monteith, who was renowned for wearing a scalloped coat. Monteiths were originally made with a shaped or notched upper rim, (of similar design to their namesake’s coat). This emarginated rim allowed a punch ladle, tall glasses and a lemon strainer to be held by the bowl. Later this became a removable ’crown’, allowing the bowl to be used as a punch bowl.
