**Meiji period late 19th century, Japan**

**27.5cm long**

**10.83 inches long**

Decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, shishiai-takamaki-e, togitashi-e and kirikaneon a hirame and mura-nashiji ground. The scene depicts the Waka-no-ura with thatched huts near the sea amongst pine trees and beheath golden clouds. The interior of the lid with a similar landscape with two boats and cranes in flight, the interior with removable fitted tray depicting Tamatsu island, the slate inkstonewith nashigi rim, silver waterdropper in the form of a boat with thatched roof; additionally fitted with two brushes, knife and paper pricker decorated with scrolling foliage.
