By late 1962 the success of the S Series Continental Bentleys entered its third and final chapter, with the introduction of the S3 Continental. The major cosmetic change was the introduction of the twin headlight system, providing Bentley drivers with more illumination. Mechanically speaking the S3 Continental was very similar to the S2 Continental, but benefited from having larger carburettors fitted and an upgraded power steering system. The success of the Vilhelm Koren designed Bentley S2 Continental had pleased the powers that be at Park Ward and his design was adapted for the S3 Continental chassis, with the introduction of twin headlights. The coachwork did not lend itself happily to horizontal headlights so they were instead positioned on a slight slant, a design that has commonly become known as the Chinese Eye. Chassis No BC44XC which we are currently offering for sale is one of fifty eight cars built in right hand drive to Design No 2006 by Mulliner/Park Ward on the S3 Continental chassis. It was originally ordered by Mr Sharman Crawford through Somerset Motors in Taunton, finished in steel blue with a blue interior and delivered in January of 1964. It was then retained by the original owner until 1968 when traded in for a new Rolls-Royce Mulliner/Park Ward drophead coupe. The car remained in the UK until the mid 1980's when supplied for the first time by Frank Dale & Stepsons, to a collector in Switzerland. It was then supplied again by us in 1989 to a collection in Sweden and for the final time in 1993 to a collector in England, where it has resided ever since. The car is complete with an extensive history file documenting the maintenance and improvement works carried out to the car over the past twenty plus years whilst in their care. Chassis No BC44XC presents very well cosmetically, now finished with dark blue coachwork and a grey leather interior and matching hood. It is complete with all of its tools, handbook, copy chassis cards and will come serviced and tested as per our normal preparation policy.
