The success of the Silver Dawn prompted Rolls-Royce to pursue its post war policy of producing standard factory built coachwork with the introduction of the all new Silver Cloud in early 1955. John Blatchley who was chief designer at Rolls-Royce at this time was given the task of styling the new coachwork and his work met with wide approval. The new offering from Rolls-Royce was larger in size than its predecessor but is still considered to be one of the most elegant and balanced models ever produced. The vast majority of Silver Cloud Is between 1955 and 1959 were to the factory design, commonly known as the Standard Steel Saloon. However a limited number of cars were adapted at the H.J. Mulliner works in Chiswick to design number 7504, retaining the basic lines of the coachwork in the form of a very elegant drophead coupe. The correct term for this rare and desirable motor car is an Adaptation by H.J. Mulliner and should not be confused with cars that have subsequently been converted in more recent times. Just three original H.J. Mulliner drophead coupes were built in right hand drive on the Silver Cloud I chassis and we are very pleased to be able to offer one for sale at this time. Chassis No SMH129 was completed in May of 1959 and delivered to its first owner Mr Percy Myers. In more recent times that car was restored which included the car being re-painted in black, re-trimmed, re-chromed, the woodwork was restored and the mechanical aspects were all reviewed and restored. The result is a car of great quality. Chassis number SMH129 also benefits from the later mechanical upgrades, those being power steering, the dual braking system and the larger 8:1 compression carburettors, all of which were original factory fittings. The car presents and drives beautifully and its mechanical aspects have been reviewed, prepared, serviced and thoroughly tested in our workshops as per our normal policy to allow the next fortunate owner trouble free onward motoring. Chassis No SMH129 comes complete with a good history file and copies of the original factory chassis cards. The Adaptation style Silver Clouds of the late 1950s and early 1960s have become one of the most sought after models over the past decade, encompassing the very best aspects of post war Rolls-Royce motoring. This particular car represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautiful example.
