HISTORY OF THE 1939 CADILLAC SERIES 61
For 1939, Cadillac took a step forward with the styling of their Series 61 which started with a sleeker die-cast grille design. The interior saw numerous improvements over previous models. The column mounted "syncromatic gearshift" lever and dashboard hinged emergency brake lever improved interior space for more legroom and headroom. To highlight the cars noticeably lower stance, running boards became optional. Larger windows increased the driver's view which increased safety and allowed for a streamlined dashboard that blended the instruments and controls effortlessly into the design. These improvements caught the attention of the American public as Cadillac noticed increasing sales versus the previous years. Power was provided by the 346ci flathead V8 engine that was machined to the highest possible standards and provided a smooth 135hp. The Series 61 was offered in four standard designs for 1939: the four-door touring sedan, four-door convertible sedan, two-door coupe and the sleek two-door convertible coupe. Rear folding opera seats were offered on the two-door Series 61 variants, improving appeal without sacrificing style. Only 5,913 Series 61 Cadillacs were assembled for 1939 though the appearance of the 1939 convertible coupe has made the model highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.
