"Steel is often where our thoughts begin," says Gabriel Kakon, who with brother-in-law Scott Richler created Gabriel Scott. The Welles 3-Spoke light combines the designers' sturdy starting point with an artisanal process that creates a blackened patina: the result is an oil-rubbed look that reveals a depth of gold undertones. The interior finish of polished copper provides a striking contrast. "It's a sculpture or signature piece that's really interesting," notes Kakon. "A statement couch might not necessarily be comfortable, but lighting can function like a piece of art."
