In 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru initiated a vast plan of modernization throughout newly indepedendent India during which Chandigarh became the administrative capital of the Punjab province. Nehru commissioned cousins Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret to construct the capital from scratch, with the sole instruction that they should be expressive, experimental, and not hindered by tradition. The furniture produced for the epic modernist enterprise included this original "Office armchair" (model PJ-SI-28-B). Designed by Jeanneret around 1955 and handmade in India, it has a solid teak frame with cane seat and back.
