Hoogvliet's "RE-SEA ME" is a rug and a stool made from the discarded skins of salmon, collected as wasted by-products from the local fish shops in her area. By tanning the discarded fish skins and treating them without chemicals, Nienke produced a strong, sustainable and durable material that can be utilized much in the same way as common leather. Cutting it into small circles that resemble the glistening interior of seashells, she fastened this ocean by-product to an old fishing net, creating a conceptual rug with aesthetic appeal-the "scales" and pattern of the salmon skins give off a reflective, opalescent luster.
