A polished steel and brass bear collar formed of two curved strips of steel with a large brass hinge at the back and a padlocked front, with brass name plate inscribed 'Callisto'.
In Greek mythology Callisto was a nymph of Lycaon, a king of Arcadia, who had 50 sons. Transformed into a bear and set among the stars, she was the bear-mother of the Arcadians, through her son Arcas. This bear reference thus explains the name on the collar of this rare object.
