At the 1938 French Grand Prix, each competitor was allowed a maximum of three race cars. Mercedes-Benz team manager, Alfred Neubauer, entered one for Caracciola, von Brauchitsch and Lang. Richard “Dick” Seaman had been recruited as replacement driver so he was not permitted to compete. However, prior to the race commencing, Seaman was asked to do some test runs in a specially-labeled W154 test car. While studying the course, he gathered a great deal of valuable information that helped his team plan their strategy and created the perfect setup for Mercedes-Benz to claim their victory.
