The annual Mille Miglia was a legendary road race through Italy, a punishing 1,000 mile endurance test for man and machine alike. It was the race that every auto maker in the world wanted to win to prove how superior its cars were. In 1955, Mercedes-Benz had high hopes for this race, as they debuted their 300 SLR, the most advanced race car of its time. At 7:04 in the morning of May 1st, the third of the four Mercedes-Benz cars commenced the race, with driver Hans Herrmann and co-pilot Herrmann Eger in the cockpit. Herrmann was faster than Moss at the time but was unfortunately less lucky. The fuel filler cap came loose spilling fuel all over the drivers, and the drivers had to abandon the race after holding a promising lead. Although Herrmann didn’t see the race to the finish line, the outcome of this race was world-famous with a record breaking Mercedes-Benz victory. He remains a part of this fabled triumph.
