The first locally published book on Philippine botany, Blanco (1778 - 1845) was a Spanish priest, explorer and botanist who spent some 40 years in the Philippines. In his book Blanco describes over 1,000 plants and classifies them according to the Linnean system; their history, medicinal values; use in construction, in industry and in the arts are also herein investigated. The work was so relevant to Philippine botanical knowledge that it was reprinted in a second edition (offered) and in a 19th century third edition, the later one in 1877 and embellished with 477 chromolithographic plates.
