This handmade model of the Luna 9 spacecraft was part of an exclusive presentation model by the Russian company Lavochkin Research and Production Association. On February 3, 1966, the Luna 9 became the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the moon, proving that the lunar surface could support the weight of the aircraft, rather than sinking into a loose layer of dust, as had been feared. Over its three-day period of operation, the Luna 9 transmitted photographic data to Earth, producing a total of twenty-seven individual images of the lunar surface.
