The KAIWOO MARU (King of the Sea) is a Japanese four-masted training barque tall ship. She was built and launched in 1989 to replace a 1930 ship of the same name.
She is a regular participant in international tall ship gatherings such as Operation Sail and is a multiple winner of the Boston Teapot Trophy. The most notable moment in her history was surely in October 2004 when, in the Bay of Toyoma, she narrowly survived in Typhoon Tokage. 30 of her crew of action until Januay 2006 after major reparis.
In March 2011, Kaiwo Maru was on a voyage from Japan to Honolulu, Hawaii when an earhquake and tsunami struck Japan. She was subsequently diverted to Okuma, Fukushima for workers tackling in the nuclear crisis.
