A direct result of the dialogue between material and process, the "Hono Bench/Coffee Table" is a tribute to the natural world, beginning as a carefully selected live edge log. An ancient Japanese finishing technique known as shou sugi ban is performed, leveraging the charred wood's natural resilience to fire, rot, and infestation. The annual growth cycle of the tree-expressed by its pattern of rings-is embossed, and its soft springwood is burned off leaving the raised rings of summer wood behind. It is then finished with a non-toxic, plant-based oil, resulting in a thoughtful furniture piece that remains an integral part of nature.
