An early 20th century J. Jaques & Sons Ltd Staunton Chess Set.
The black set is made of ebony, the white set made of boxwood, the King 4" high. The set is contained in the original mahogany box which has a green baize-lined interior with label inscribed 'Genuine Staunton Chessmen, Two Prize Medals Awarded', with facsimile signature H Staunton. Further inscribed 'Note this signature. Without it, none are Genuine, J. Jaques & Son Ltd, London, England'. Both Kings inscribed Jaques London.
The Staunton Chess Set is composed of a particular type of chess pieces: According to the rules of Chess, this style is to be used in competitions. And our set, with the 4" King is also the required size for competition use. Nathaniel Cook is credited with the design and the set is named after Howard Staunton. This style of set was first made available by Jaques of London in 1849 and they quickly became the standard. They have been used around the world since. The sets were turned on a lathe, the non-circular details then added by hand; the knights were made in two parts which were stuck together with adhesive.
