Guānìyīn dating back to the 15th century.
The sculpture depicts the female representation of Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. She listens to the sufferings of the world and frees us and her gaze is always turned downwards, to those who are entangled in the cycle of reincarnations. It is carved with a wide open dress on the front, showing the complex symbol necklace of the Chinese imperial family. The simple but well-groomed hairstyle is enriched by the crown whose shape invokes the lotus flower. The body and hands positions reveal the iconography of Guānìyīn of "Water and Moon".
Deity is represented with the right knee up and the left hand resting on the ground, sitting in the pure earth or his personal paradise. The chubby cheeks and the tight mouth recall the aesthetic rules defined since the Liao era. Red and blue polychromatic traces are still visible, especially on the drape around the goddess's shoulders.
