Sourcing her inspiration in the painting of the old masters of the 14th to 17th centuries, such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, or Vermeer, Romina Ressia composes her photographs like a painter constructs a painting. Through the precise study of compositions and settings, she appropriates the representational codes of yesteryear. She nonetheless distinguishes her work through a highly contemporary and personal approach, by integrating staged elements from everyday life into her photographs that conspicuously disrupt our reading of them. Considering photography as a unique means of expression, the artist raises questions of a social and behavioural nature by combining the past and the present in a surprising and creative way. Bubble Gum is inspired by the fact that despite technological and human progress, a certain nostalgia manifests itself towards the period where products were more natural and produced using traditional craft techniques. The artist raises the following question here: “how would someone from the Renaissance period behave in today’s society?”
