Markus Burke was born in Munich, a city in southern Germany where mountains and lakes dominate the geography of the territory. We can imagine that the German coastlines of the Baltic Sea nonetheless struck him as very foreign. They consist of immense sandy beaches, stretching onwards for miles and passing through several northern regions.Ostsee I takes us to Sellin, a town located on the Island of Rügen, the biggest island in Germany. Among the many tourists who go there each summer, he reports that a lot of Germans are to be found there and particularly those who lived in East Germany, who still feel a strong attachment to the “Ostsee”. The latter was a favourite holiday destination for East German residents, and the only seaside resort town available to them. The artist likes to underline the contrasting atmosphere of these shores, where nature and culture meet.
