Knight has been building a formidable art practice and reputation over the
past decade in the fields of photo-media, computer manipulation and intricate rope bondage. He is motivated by themes which explore rigidly-held constructs of reality, and the times when we momentarily lose these constraints and become one with everything.
In 2003 he won the People’s Choice Award at the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Prize, which was followed in 2004 with selection as a Finalist in the Citigroup Portrait Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW as well as his third consecutive People’s Choice Award for photographic work in the annual Leather Pride exhibition.
Knight has been selected to exhibit twice at the Australian Centre of Photography, Sydney (in 2004 and 2011), and also at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China (2011). He was awarded a prestigious residency at the Bundanon Trust Artists program in 2007 and most recently, in 2013 he was invited to create a performative installation piece as part of the MOFO Festival at MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Tasmania. Knight has also been invited to exhibit at The Australian Centre of Photography for a third time in 31 May to 17 August 2014.
He has exhibited internationally at Iconoclastes- Gallery d’Art, Paris in 2008, which was his first collaboration with world-renowned Parisienne jeweller, Lorenz Baumer (Head of Fine Jewels at Louis Vuitton).
Garth Knight’s work is held in corporate and private collections internationally and his works are also featured in limited edition publications and folios.
“The real revelation of the centre’s exhibition proved to be Garth Knight’s intricately detailed colour images of insects. I found these astonishing in their opalescent detail. Looking closer at Knight’s large, golden image of a spider I found hundreds, perhaps thousands of tiny female faces hidden within the body of the insect.” Robert McFarlane, Art Critic, Sydney Morning Herald.
