Born in France in 1964, Pierre Matter was originally a mathematician. His early artistic career saw him delving into many different mediums, from comics to bas-relief on stone, from oil to gouache to ink, before finally settling on metal and the three-dimensional form. Matter’s fondness for mathematics and natural order has informed the direction of his artistic creations. Known as the ‘scrap-metal sculptor’, he draws inspiration from science fiction and the aesthetic of machined abstract objects. His sculptures combine mechanical technology with organic forms, morphing the living with the machine, natural with industrial, to form strange and beautiful hybrids. Created in a broad range of materials, including copper, bronze, brass and steel, Matter’s works explore the relationship between natural and man-made, and tell the tale of the future of technology. Central to his practice is the idea of Man’s reliance on technology and the mechanized world, with machines having become so essential to our daily lives that it is built into us as an extension of our mortal being. At the same time, Matter depicts the mechanized as extensions or prosthetics seamlessly integrated into natural forms, showing the viewer the harmony that now exists between humans and materials.
