BIOGRAPHY

**John MacDonald** has forged a career as a full-time landscape painter, freelance illustrator and printmaker for the past two decades. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows throughout the USA and Canada and can be found amid private, corporate and museum collections in North America and abroad. John earned a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and received an MA in Painting and Drawing from Purdue University, Indiana. John also undertook intensive studies in Printmaking at the Institute for American Universities in Avignon, France; finding influence from the traditional techniques used in Japanese woodcuts to further develop his methods of image making.

Influenced by the great European and American traditional and tonalist painting masters, the paintings by John MacDonald realistically capture the immensity of space, color, light, and atmosphere found in the natural landscapes of rural New England. His imagery gracefully depicts the fleeting moments of time and captures the essence of environment - wrought from keen observation, technical mastery and imaginary reflection.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"My work has always been driven by the joy and wonder that arises in the act of translating what is seen in the natural world into an artistic creation. The color, texture, composition, line and form _of a landscape continue to intrigue me and I am endlessly fascinated by the slow, magical appearance of three-dimensional space as it unfolds on a two-dimensional surface. To paint, and thus to lose myself (literally, my sense of self) in the much larger and real world of presence, timelessness, and the mystery of the landscape, is my constant goal and inspiration."
