Wonderful wall coat of arms made of travertine, depicting the fasces, entirely carved and worked by hand and dating back to 1927/1928, as shown by the engraved date. From an important and exclusive private collection of antique items in Rome. In ancient Rome, the fasces were arms used by lictors. They consisted of a bundle of wooden sticks bound with leather straps, usually around an axe. They were successively used as heraldic symbols of political movements and ideologies of the 20th century, such as fascism. The item has a wonderful patina. Perfect to be hung on the wall or leaned against it. Large, well proportioned and quite heavy. Lot of excellent quality and workmanship. Also the decoration around the fasces, on the edge of the coat of arms, is very nice. This coat of arms is one of a kind, rare and impossible to find on the common market. It is an exclusive item for real enthusiasts.The travertine is a chemical calcareous sedimentary rock, widely used in construction, especially in Rome, from the first millennium BC. During the Fascist period many new structures were built in travertine, inspired by the monuments of the Roman Empire. Even the famous Trevi fountain was built with the use of travertine.The Fascist period started the day after the march on Rome, which took place on 28 October 1922. Therefore, the year “VI” engraved on this item indicates the year between 29 October 1927 and 28 October 1928. It is in excellent overall condition, completely intact.
