Beautiful work in Istrian marble, worked and carved by hand, depicting Saint Sebastian transfixed with arrows. The work dates back to the late 19th century and comes from a private collection in Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italy. According to the legend, the emperor Diocletian, who hated Christians, found out that Sebastian was a Christian and exclaimed: “I have always kept you among the eminent people of my palace, and you acted secretly against me.” Sebastian was then sentenced to death. He was bound naked to a stake on the Palatine Hill and transfixed by so many arrows that he looked like an urchin. The attention to details is considerable (anatomy, hair, clothes, face, etc.). The wounds are clearly visible. Nice and elegant marble veins, as well as the patina.
