This large basket is probably, together with another basket made by Reynier Brandt in 1774, the largest and earliest in this style. The mentioned basket with the foliate supports, inscribed with SWJJ, is wide overall 39 cm., and recorded in the collection of A.N. Zadoks-Josephus Jattos in 1980. In this article, by Zadoks, a slightly smaller and later basket (1776) is illustrated as part of the collection in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin. Artist Biography:
Reynier Brandt was born in Wezel,(Rijnland), The son of Wilhelm and Anna Katharina Westerholt. He began silversmithing in 1734 and married Maria van Wierop in 1737 in Lauriergracht, Amsterdam. He is noted in his production of bread baskets, trays, sugar casters. The gold and silversmith Gerrard Boete is recorded as the witness at Brandt's wedding.
