The angels portrait sculptures which are very common in Portuguese and Spanish altarpieces, considered as the angels with the lighting, therefore their accentuated volume. Portuguese baroque sculpture is one of the most authentic and personal examples of the art of this country because its conception and its form of expression arose from the people and the deepest feelings that nested on them. With the economy of the State broke, the nobility declining and the high clergy loaded with strong charges, the monasteries, parishes and the brotherhoods of clerics and laity were the ones which prompted its development, being the works sometimes paid for by popular subscription. The sculpture was thus dedicated to capture the prevailing ideals in these environments, which were no other than religious ones, in a moment in which the contra-reforming doctrine required art a realistic language so that the faithful could understand and be identified with the represented, and an expression with an intense emotional content to increase the fervour and devotion of the people.
