Lion of St. Mark in Botticino marble with original iron sword - The Most Serene in high relief - Venice, Italy - 19th/20th century

US$735.60

Majestic Lion of St. Mark, The Most Serene in high relief, in Botticino marble with original iron sword. This artwork was entirely carved and worked by hand. It comes from the city of Venice and was placed in the main hall of one of the most important noble palaces. This item is very rare because it represents a winged lion with a real sword, not carved in the marble. It has a hole on one paw, where the sword can be inserted. Unusual representation, hard to find. Please note the precision and the attention to detail. The anatomy of the lion is carved with much accuracy (nails, muscles, mane and wings). There are many symbolic interpretations about the combination of sword and book. In this case, the closed book and the drawn sword are popularly (but erroneously) considered a symbol of war. However, such interpretations are not universally accepted as the Most Serene Republic never codified its own symbols, which were represented in many different ways. Good dimensions (not excessive), well proportioned and quite heavy. The item is in perfect condition and completely intact in all its parts. This lot is one of a kind, of excellent quality and workmanship, fine and elegant, but at the same time powerful and muscular. Prestigious and excellent workmanship. In case of shipping, it will be delivered in a sturdy wooden crate, with appropriate packaging. Trackable and safe shipping throughout Italy, Europe and the rest of the world, at low rates. Dimensions:- width 50.5 cm- length 39.5 cm- maximum thickness 9 cm.Weight: 30 kg.
