L'Allégro Bronze Sculpture After Gregoire
L'Allégro Bronze Sculpture After Gregoire
US$642.70
This is a lovely bronze sculpture of two classical women dancing made from the lost wax process 'cire perdue'. The bronze features pair of dancing Bacchante, one with her arms raised and holding a tambourine, the other holding a vine-wrapped staff, a putto with a horn at their feet on the naturalistically cast circular base It is a recast of an original called L'Allegro by the renowned 19th century French sculptor Jean-Louis Gregoire. Jean-Louis Grégoire was born and died in Paris. Training under Salmson at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Salon from 1867 and became one of the first Associates of the Artistes Français. The work, L'Allégro, is one of several groups by Grégoire that take music as their theme, others being his figure of Mozart enfant, tuning his violin, and Un artiste au XVIIe siècle, also portraying a violinist. Compositionally, L'Allégro has affinities with works by Salmson, in which two figures are depicted in movement, and it is also related to other works by Grégoire, such as La Confidence, Perseus and Andromeda and Helen and Paris. The attention to detail is fantastic and the sculpture, set on an attractive marble base, is very lifelike. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation. In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
