Antique ivory medallion from ca 1700 with image of Johann III Sobieski, King of Poland, 1629-1696. RAREJohann III is also known as Jan III or John III.Ivory medallion in wooden frame. Diameter 5 cm (ivory medallion) and 7.5 cm (wooden frame).Johann III Sobieski was famous for his victory over the Turks in the battle of Vienna in 1683.The edge engraved text reads: JO III DACICVS TVRC TART POLON REX MAX.Bust of the King in profile, with crown and ermine mantle. Inscription (Latin): JO [annes] III DACICVS TVRC [icus] TART [aricus] POLON [iae] REX MAX [imus], this means: John III, Wallachia, Turkish, Tatar, Polish King the most outstanding.Medallion is in very good condition.Previously owned by Polish refugees (nobility) in Paris, early 1900.According to the accompanying official valuation, the medallion is from circa 1700.Worldwide shipping (registered).
