He participated in several art courses, first in Groningen and then in Amsterdam, and he won the Prix de Rome with his sculpture “De Smart” He became a close friend of the painter (and his later patroness) Geesje Mesdag-van Calcar, sister-in-law of the painter of seascapes H.W.
