Dying Minotaur - great bronze work - Neoclassical - 19th century

US$3,598.80

The Minotaur is one of the most fascinating among the mythological figures of ancient Greece. It is a creature partly man, partly bull, born from the union between the wife of the Minos, king of Crete, and a white bull sent as a gift from Poseidon, god of the sea, to the sovereign.Minos is so much struck by the beauty of the animal to decide not to sacrifice it as initially established, rather he wants that bull to mount his flocks. The work incorporates the dramatic effects typical of the existential restlessness of 1600s.The work comes from an important private collection. It was found outside a patrician villa, perfectly intact, with the typical oxidation of bronze alloy due to outdoor weathering, with the resulting loss of the original patina.Dimensions: height 65 cm, weight 44 cm, depth 46 cm, weight 50 kgNote well:Remarkable, as per photo, the cutting on the pierced rib, to highlight the dramatic nature of the injury.
