The scales, the oldest symbol, has balanced pans, emblem of perfection and equity. The sword is symbol of punishment of the wicked and emblem of enforceability. Scales and sword together represent the two sides of justice: the first is the judgment, the second is the punishment. The blindfold represents the impartiality of the justice: it represents the sentence “all are equal before the law”.
