A large bronze sculpture by listed French artist Charles Anfrie (1833 – 1905). The piece, titled "Fusilier Marin du Bayard", depicts a male figure in a French naval uniform (a French Marine) looking intently forward while shielding his eyes and holding an axe. The item is signed on the base.The new cruise ship Bayard (launched in March 1880), was sent on a mission to Tonkin in May 1883. On 10 July 1883, the Bayard, commanded by Vice-Admiral Amédée Anatole Prosper Courbet, 'Along, off Tonkin, where he headed the Tonkin Naval Division. He seized the citadel of Hue, compelling the emperor of Annam Hipep Hoa to sign the peace treaty of Hue (August 1883) which imposed on this region the protectorate of France.
