Wonderful bust by the sculptor Antonio Argenti (born in Viggù, Varese, Italy in 1845 and died in 1916). Signed A. Argenti on bottom right. White Carrara marble bust depicting Christ, caught in the moment of ecstatic communion with the Most High God. Softly moulded, it shows a high quality level and is carved out of a single marble block. The head is tilted to the right, the gaunt face shows regular features and is characterized by a straight nose. The veiled eyes gaze towards the sky, the tiny lips are slightly opened. The cascade of wavy vaporous hair drooping onto the shoulders is opposed to the beard, skilfully carved into separate locks. Many are the artist’s graves at the Monumental Cemetery in Milan and abroad. Especially noteworthy are his magnificent monument for the Osborne a'Hanan family in London and the mortuary chapel built in Dorno. Varese, Italy - circa 1880. In good condition, with expertise of its originality. From a private collection. Dimensions: height 40 cm, length 38 cm, width 25 cm. Weight: 41 kg.
