This is a fabulous antique writing table, circa 1880 in date. The desk is crafted from beautiful burr walnut and features two striking green leather writing surfaces. It is inlaid with interlaced strap-work bands on each end and it has marquetry decoration and crossbanding on the sides. The edges of the desk are carved with foliate decoration on a matted ground and each side of the desk is fitted with a useful drawer. The stretcher base stands on cabriole legs which is also made from solid walnut and features hand carved decoration. This writing table is a beautiful example of a free standing piece of furniture which is certain to make a statement wherever it is placed. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produce some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find. Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, mother of pearl, pewter, brass silver or shell) of different colors are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers.
