This is an elegant English antique sterling silver entree dish with cover by the world famous silversmith Paul Storr. It has hallmarks for London 1796, the makers mark of Paul Storr and bears an interesting coat of arms : The Marital Arms of Long and Thomlinson The arms as engraved upon this George III English Sterling Silver Entrée Dish by Paul Storr hallmarked London 1796 are those of the family of Long with Thomlinson in pretence. They may be blazoned as follows: Arms: Quarterly 1st and 4th Sable a lion passant argent* on a chief of the second three cross crosslets of the field (for Long) 2nd Per fess or** and gules a pale counterchanged three Cornish choughs proper a mullet for difference (for Tate) and 3rd Per pale on a chevron argent between three martlets or an eagle displayed sable (for Beckford) over all an escutcheon of pretence Per pale vert and argent three greyhounds courant counterchanged a chief engrailed or (for Thomlinson) * Some authorities stated that the lion is holding in its dexter paw ‘a cross crosslet fitchy or’. ** The engraver appears not to have indicated ‘or’ (gold) by a series of small dots. These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Edward Beeston Long, of Hampton Lodge, Farnham in the County of Surrey (born 1st March 1763 died 17th September 1825) and Mary Thomlinson (born 1764 died 1818), daughter and heiress of John Thomlinson, Member of Parliament for Steyning in the County of Sussex and eventual heiress of her grandfather, John Thomlinson, of East Barnet in the County of Hertfordshire. Edward and Mary were married on the 20th February 1786 at the Parish Church of St Marylebone, Westminster in the County of Middlesex. Edward was the eldest son of Edward Long, Barrister at Law and Mary Ballard Beckford, daughter and heir of Thomas Beckford. The family of Long anciently stemmed from the County of Wiltshire. It is one of Paul Storr's earlier works with a simple yet very elegant design featuring a gadrooned border which makes this piece even more desirable. There is no mistaking its unique and fabulous quality and design. Condition: In excellent condition with no signs of repair, please see photos for confirmation. Today his legacy of exceptionally well crafted silver, found worldwide in museums and private collections, leaves one in awe when compared to that of his contemporaries. After having served a seven year apprenticeship from the age of 14, he began his career in 1792 when he went into a brief partnership with William Frisbee. This did not last and in 1793 a new mark, (his initials ‘P S’) was entered. By the beginning of the nineteenth century he had established himself as one of London’s top silversmiths producing, amongst others, commissions for Royalty. In 1801 he married Elizabeth Susanna Beyer with whom he was to have ten children. In 1807 Paul Storr entered into a working relationship with Philip Rundell and by 1811 was a partner, and managing the workshops for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. During this period he kept his own marks and separate workshop. However it was through Rundell, Bridge & Rundell who were appointed Goldsmith in Ordinary to George III in 1804 that his reputation as a master silversmith grew. His talents lay in being able to transform ideas and designs from Rundell, Bridge & Rundell’s designers, William Theed II, the chief modeller and head of the design department, and later John Flaxman II who succeeded him in 1817. During this period Rundell, Bridge & Rundell’s reputation grew due to the patronage of the Prince Regent (later George IV).
