This is an absolutely exquisite antique pair of large Victorian portraits, by unknown artist, circa 1870. The portraits are of a husband and a wife who judging by the size of the paintings must have been quite well off to afford it. The husband is probably in his thirties and looks very grand with a Victoria cross in his black frock coat. He is holding a small red book which might be a constitution book. The wife, probably in her late twenties, is dressed according to Victorian fashion in a black dress with white lace shirt and a shawl. Her jewellery is very modest and simple. She is wearing a bracelet, simple rings and a cameo brooch, she has lovely black locks and a nostalgic look in her eyes. Although the artist is unknown the paintings must have been executed by an artist of great skill. Attention to detail as well as incredible talent make the subjects almost come alive. The pair of superb decorative 19th Century frames have their original gold leaf finish, are in really excellent condition and are of a model made by Polak Brothers, 17 Rathbone Place, Oxford Street, London.
