Fantastic figurehead for a fountain made in carved quartzite.Figure representing a lion's head with a great expression, possibly from the 16th/17th century, Italian Renaissance. Dimensions: 38 cm high x 50 cm wide x 13 cm deep.We are in the presence of a great piece of a very important size made of alpujarride quartzite, used for its high resistance to erosion. Alpujarride belongs to the well-known and old exporting quarries since ancient times of Carthago Nova and surroundings Hispania Citerior. Quartzite is a metamorphic hard rock with high quartz content even though the works of art made in quartzite are very rare and exclusive, we can see works made by ancient civilizations. see: (Figure of a lion, ca. 3100–2900 B.C. Egypt, Dynasty. Quartzite; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Acquisition, Fletcher Fund and The Guid Foundation Inc. Gift,)Please see all pictures to know the status of the batch. From a private collection
