### DESCRIPTION
Antique early-20th Century exceptionally rare Burmese, Myanmar solid silver repousse' bowls, very well made and heavy gauge, repousse' decorated in high relief with continuous scene depicting Burmese mythology. The workmenship is particularly crisp and detailed.
Base is stamped MAUNG YIN MAUNG, MASTER SILVERSMITH, 29 GODWIN ROAD, RANGOON, (now Myoma Kyaung st), Maung Shwe Yon (Father) who was the founder of the silver workshop, died in 1889 and was succeeded by his three sons Maung Shwe Bin, Maung Thu Hlaing and Maung Yin Maung, who is responsible for making this spectacular bowl (for more information please see Wilkinson, 1999, p.36)
MYM was awarded one of the nineteen gold medals for his work in the metalwares section at the Delhi exhibition 1902-1903, this bowl is not dated and perhaps was made for the exhibition.
Maung Shwe Yon workshop is associated with the finest and most desirable silver produced in Burma under the British rule, its very rare to find Burmese silver marked with the makers mark in English. A similar bowl by MYM recently sold in auction for £11,500 hammer (+22% premium) with the exact inscription on the base, measuring 23cm across, at Sworders Auction, November 24, lot 25.
