DESCRIPTION
Antique late-19th Century unusual Chinese solid silver decorative spittoon bowl, of round form with large wavy rim, plain ground applied, depicting birds flying and perched on blossoming cherry trees. The bowl is particularly large, heavy and very well crafted, by one of the most rare and outstanding Chinese silversmith retailers.
The base is Hallmarked Chinese silver 90 (900+ standard), Mark "WH" for Wang Hing & Company,
this kind of quality of work is by the artisan silversmith Pei Zhen, whose mark accompanies the W.H retail marks. Wang Hing & Company was probably responsible for producing more Chinese Export Silver than any other Chinese retailers. The company was also one of the first to establish a large retail emporium that grew to sell a wide variety of luxury goods to clients from all over the world. For more information please see A. Von Ferscht, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940, 4th edition 2015.
