DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century exceptionally rare Burmese, Myanmar Solid Silver bowl, repousse' decorated in high relief depicting different traditional scenes from the Burmese mythology, showing detailed figures set against a chiseled matted background in landscape. The top chased with scrolling bands and base decorated with a thick band of betel leaves. The quality of the bowl is simply sensational and very crisp.

Base engraved with the deer makers mark for Maung Shwe Yon & Sons, Rangoon (see page 41, Wilkinson's Indian silver). Maung Shwe Yon was one of the greatest master silversmiths active in Burma during the British colonial period. MSY died in 1889 and was succeeded by his three sons Maung Shwe Bin, Maung Thu Hlaing and Maung Yin Maung who would continue the family tradition, trading as the Maung Shwe Yon Brothers. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Maung Yin Maung became the most celebrated Burmese silversmith winning the gold medal for his work in the metalwares section at the Delhi exhibition 1902-1903. This is not to cast shadow on his father who is undoubtedly responsible for setting up the most celebrated Burmese silver workshop and is also known to have participated in International exhibitions, including having displayed his silver at royal courts and now having his items displayed at the V&A museum.
