The suite is made for the mansion of the Family Caestecker at the Heilige Geeststraat 1, Bruges, where now the hotel "De Castillion" is located. The mansion was decorated in the 1920s and early 1930s by De Coene (under the marble top of the right cabinet of the coiffeuse the name of the client "Mr. Caestecker" is written in pencil). In the property an Art Deco salon of De Coene (named the "Golden Salon") from 1934 can still be admired. In the third yearbook of the De Coene Foundation, vzw, ART DE COENE of 2002, this interior is described on page 7. In this text the actual 'late empire style' of the interior of the building is referred to.In the De Coene archives the scans of two showroom photos of this Empire style bedroom suite is listed (see black and white photos). The furniture on auction here, originally come from the property of the Caestecker family, are identical. The suite is not marked, however in 2003 a similar De Coene bedroom in 1920s Empire style was displayed in the antique shop of the brothers Paul and Henry Vannneste in Harelbeke, ANTIEKHALLE bvba (formerly Sint-Bernardusgalerij in Kuurne) This suite was marked: an ink stamp was applied at the bottom of a drawer of a night table, DE COENE-EIKELAARMOTIEF-COURTRAI. The keys had the inscription: ”De Coene Frères-Courtrai”.In the 1920s, the De Coene company decorated town houses and hotels in French neo-styles. it is wonderful that the neo-styles can still be admired in these buildings. But also that the Art-Deco style was used in certain rooms. In Bruges this was the case for the living room in the mansion of the Caestecker family (the Gouden Salon) and the restaurant De Zilveren Pauw (Zilverstraat 41).Both De Coene-interiors in Bruges were described by Piet Swimberghe in the third yearbook of the De Coene Foundation, vzw, ART DE COENE of 2002 (pages 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). A similar bedroom suite is offered in an auction at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels in 2005. On its website the auction house had printed two general colour pictures of the De Coene bedroom and one detail photo. One can see that there are very small differences with the model of the Caestecker-de Vos family from Bruges (see photos).Provenance: Made in the 1920s/30s for the Caestecker family and handed down and now in the possession of the current offeror.A comprehensive study was made about the De Coene suite, the report will be included in the suite by the seller.
