Rare 18th century cabinet of exceptional quality in 'acajou moucheté' probably on manufactured on order for a wealthy resident of Amsterdam. In all facets this cabinet breathes great craftsmanship and luxury of the Golden Age, both in construction and veneer that is called bird’s eye mahogany, or ‘acajou moucheté’, or sometimes 'Leopard veneer'. This 18th century cabinet has the contemporary, from England imported, mountings of a remarkable solid quality. One can speak of Cuba, Santo Domingo, (Swietenia macrophylla King) or Honduras mahogany; the first two gave the most beautiful mahogany. The hardness, colour, and drawing are influenced by the local soil conditions. In England it was used from ca. 1730 and in the Netherlands from around ca, 1760 on a large scale. The colour can vary from salmon-coloured, pink, red, to deep brown, going into deep red or brown with a golden glow. The French also used the rare acajou moucheté in the 18th century, that is speckled mahogany. In Dutch that is called ‘pommelé mahogany’ or ‘geappeld mahogany’.The round or oval 'Leopard-like’ surfaces with a concentric drawing were probably created by the action of a parasitic mushroom in the Cambrian **.
