**Chola dynasty, 13th century, South India**
**Height: 49.5 cm, 19.6 inches**
Shivas consort is seated in Rajalila Asana (the king's posture) on an oval double lotus base supported on a simple rectangular pedestal above a single band of splayed lotus petals. The elegant and restrained image is seated fore square, the head turned slightly to her right, the positions of the legs and arms creating a wonderful sculptural tour de force. The figure is totally relaxed, looking both voluptuous and regal, wearing a dhoti that clings to her legs and around her waist a series of belt like bands that accentuate her hips. Her upper body is naked except for some simple jewellery, while her hair is raised into a high chignon held in place by a crown and a double band of tassels further up, the back of the head bearing a simple open work circular mandala.
